What stays on your Mac, and what doesn't
What Prunable reads from your device
Over the same connection Finder uses, and only while the device is connected:
- the apps you installed, their sizes, versions and store details, and from each app's own settings what it may ask permission for and keep doing in the background;
- the device's name, model, iOS version, storage, carrier and SIM, battery charge, health and charging, backup dates, how it was set up, and whether deleting apps is restricted or the device is managed;
- the Home Screen layout and icons;
- the daily app-usage reports and the crash and low-memory reports your device writes for itself. They're copied to your Mac and stay there; on the device they are read, never changed or removed;
- only when you ask: the contents of a file-sharing app's Documents folder, the sizes of the photo, music and download folders, and the list of videos in the Camera Roll (names, sizes, dates; no photo is opened unless you copy it to your Mac).
Identifiers such as the serial number appear on the Overview page for your own use and are never logged or sent. The account an app was downloaded with is kept only as a scrambled code, to tell apart apps from different Apple Accounts.
What leaves your Mac
- App bundle identifiers go to Apple's public iTunes lookup service to fetch names, categories, descriptions, icons, age ratings and current prices. Results are cached on your Mac for a week.
- Apple's public software-update list is downloaded at most twice a day, whole, to tell you whether a newer iOS is out for your device. Nothing about your device is sent; the comparison happens on your Mac.
- Those are the only requests Prunable makes on its own. Nothing else: no analytics, no crash reporting, no account, no telemetry, no server of ours.
- Only when you ask: "Get AI Help" opens a public AI service in your browser with a question that names the app and what kind of app it is, never your device or you. "Check for Updates" fetches our update feed. "Connect Now" looks for your device on your own network, asking the other devices there only for their name and model. The QR codes (reinstall list, missing apps, steps, check-up) serve one page on your own network only while that window is open. Share, AirDrop, Print and Mail hand a file to macOS; where it goes is up to you.
- Licenses: activating a Pro key sends the key and your Mac's name to our payment provider's license service to confirm it.
What Prunable keeps on your Mac
Saved scans (so you can see what changed), deletion history, cached icons and store details, copies of your Home Screen layout taken before each change, the usage, battery, crash and memory history it has collected, each device's last details and the network address it last answered at, your Dashboard layout, Recycle Bin, checklist ticks and any "Maybe Delete" trial, and the list of devices you've connected. All of it lives in your Library folder under the app's name; Forget Device deletes a device's share of it, and deleting the app's folder removes the rest.
What Prunable changes on your device
Only what you confirm: uninstalling an app, deleting files from a shared Documents folder, or changing the Home Screen (applying a layout, or moving apps into a "Maybe Delete" folder). Each goes through an explicit step, the Home Screen is saved before every change so it can be put back, and nothing on the device changes while you only look. Prunable never deletes photos or videos.
